Press Release for Launching Ceremony of Challenges to Independent Media 2017

Government’s coordinated crackdowns on independent media in the second half of 2017 vindicated how vulnerable the independent media institutions are. The government hostility in August and September 2017, however, did not fully highlight all of the challenges faced by independent media in Cambodia. Legal threats, difficulties in reporting sensitive issues, and low payment are just some of a few critical challenges encountered by both independent journalists and media institutions in Cambodia. With a generous financial and technical supports by the European Union and DanChurchAid Cambodia Office, the Cambodian Center for Independent Media (CCIM) is pleased announce that CCIM is going to release a report of Challenges to Independent Media in Cambodia 2017 on Wednesday morning, February 21, 2018 at Sunway Hotel.  The ceremony will be presided over by H.E. Khieu Kanharith, Minister of Information and H.E. George Edgar Ambassador of the European Union to the Kingdom of Cambodia. Within this context, CCIM is honor to invite donors, partners, representatives of CSOs, reporters, media institutions and other stakeholders to join the ceremony. While the Challenges to Independent Media in Cambodia 2017 provided comprehensive and timely findings in the light of shrinking freedom of press, CCIM hopes that the report will be of great interests for those working in media, researchers and people of Cambodia as a whole.
